me share with you my own personal story about equipment rentals. This
will help me better explain
how the
medical alert industry makes most of their profits.
Back in 1979, I had just graduated college. My two college
roommates and I decided it would be a great idea to rent a modest 3
bedroom apartment in the city of
Philadelphia, PA.
We rented a U-Haul truck to move our possessions directly from our
Penn State University campus to Philadelphia
in one day.
My First
Introduction To Leasing
We were so excited about getting our own place, that we failed to
realized that we had nothing to furnish it with! All we had was the
beat
up
bedroom furniture we each
brought along from college.
So we each set out on a quest to change this. We each were assigned the
task to furnish a certain part of the
apartment. My responsibilty was the diningroom area.
That very same day I scanned the local newspaper and noticed an
interesting
ad from a
local furniture chain.
They
were advertising convenient monthly payment terms for their
customers. I went there the very next day. They
had a deal for a total of $480 for the
entire year. It was broken down into12 easy payments of $40 a month. I
just needed the first month upfront.
They also mentioned that I could buy the table and 4 chairs right there
on the
spot for $399.
Paying Less Today Will Always Cost
You More Tomorrow
But the Sales Rep quickly offered his advised to me. "Why pull
all that money out of
your pocket at once", he said. "You may eventually need some of this
money for a rainy day."
"Hum." I
thought to myself. "This makes alot of sense."
I
just needed a quick furniture fix for my empty bachelor pad.
But I must say, I really liked the monthly payment option at the time.
Plus, they explained to me that I still had the option to buy the diningroom set
after 1 year. "What a bargain" I thought. " I don't see any way I could
lose."
So I jumped at the
opportunity to get the furniture for $40 a month.
Rentals
Cost You Alot More In The Long Run
One year later, I received an unexpected and very upsetting phone call
from
the Furniture Store.
The gentleman on the phone told me that he and his
men were coming out to my apartment to pick up my furniture!
"Your one year rental has just expired today," he told me. "What time
should
we drop by to pick up the table and four chairs?"
I panicked! What in the world were they talking about?
I immediately drove down to the furniture store. And on the
way there the idea
of getting rid of
this $40 monthly payment seemed like a good one to me.
"I should just buy the furniture and be done with it", I told
myself.
Any how, I figured I could negotiate the final furniture sale price
down to
maybe $100. And then be done with this furniture expense all together.
Read The
Fine Print
We'll my negotiating skills were not needed at all as I soon found out
upon arriving at the store.
They handed me the contract I had signed last year as soon as I entered
the door. It was all there in black and white for me to see. All my
options were
already spelled out for me.
The store manager then verbally explained my new option to me. I could
continue renting the same "used
furniture" that was already setting in my apartment - for just $36 a
month.
Wow - they were giving me a
fat $4 a month or 10% rental discount to rent the same "now severely
over priced" furniture this
year as well. He said the 10% discount over last year's price was
because I
paid my bill on time.
I was fuming inside and I was beginning to feel like this whole
furniture
rental business was an organized "set -'em up and knock 'em down"
type of scam.
They further explained that I could buy the "used furniture" for $399!
The
same
exact price as last year's offer. I
was stunned.
I had just paid $480 for a full year of furniture rental. And I had
nothing to show for this money.
My
initial $399 furniture had just cost me $879. The $480 first
year
rental
plus the final $399 purchase a year later.
If I had been a little financially wiser, I could have paid $399
instead of $879. And
I could have saved myself the added $480 that was the result of my wonderful and easy monthly payment plan!! Same

Here's the whole point of my story.
The same financial mis-step or poor money choices happen every day for
those who decide to rent a medical
